Do You Have a First Aid Kit Within Easy Reach?

Are you prepared for minor medical emergencies at home, at work, or when you are on the road? Doctors and safety officials recommend that you have first aid kits available in your vehicle, home, and office. You never know when a medical emergency, serious or not, can occur. Being prepared is the best defense possible.

It is a good idea to keep an emergency first aid kit somewhere in your home so that it is easily accessible. You should also have a basic first aid kit in your car and a more sophisticated one packed with other emergency supplies that you can load into your car quickly in the event you need to evacuate your home for any reason that may require an extended absence. You never know when or where a natural disaster or terrorist attack will occur, so it is essential to be prepared. In addition to first aid basics, you should also keep a flashlight, extra batteries, blankets, and food and water in case of an emergency.

First aid kits should contain rubbing alcohol or some other form of antiseptic, various sizes of bandages, pain relief medication, and anything that would be necessary for your family to be safe. If any of your family members have special medical needs such as bee sting allergies, your first aid supplies should include medication for coping with those needs in an emergency. You can put together your own first aid kit with supplies that can be bought at any drug store or big box retailer, or you can buy ready-made first aid kits at the same places.

Another handy item to keep with your emergency supplies is a weather band radio. In the event you are away from the electrical grid in an emergency, or at home in severe weather when the power goes out, it is good to be able to keep up with the latest weather forecasts and warnings with one of these battery operated radios that is always tuned to the national weather service.

It is also a good idea to keep several weeks' worth of food and other basic supplies on hand in the event of any disruption to the normal order of things. A hundred year blizzard or a major flu pandemic quarantine could force you to be home for much longer than you expect. Your survival could depend on advanced planning.

It is always a good idea to be prepared. Being prepared for any type of emergency will help you and your family survive comfortably. Having first aid kits readily available is just one step in a long list of things you can do to be prepared.
